What are Shackles used for?
A shackle is a piece of metal that has been bent into a U shape, where the opening of the shackle is secured by a clevis pin or bolt. Alternatively, a hinged loop may be used with a quick release pin if the shackle is required to be opened and closed on a regular basis.
Shackles are used in a large number of different from sailing to industrial rigging. Where a strong and reliable connection is required, a shackle is usually the most appropriate product.
The two main manufacturing methods of shackles are either forging or casting. The casting process involves pouring molten metal into a mold which the solidifies as it cools. This process sometimes results in air bubbles forming which can have a significant detrimental impact on the breaking strength of the shackle. Forged shackles result in a much stronger and more reliable end product as the pricess ensures that the shackle is made of the same grade and intensity of steel.
